Gordon Howard “Paddy” FitzGerald, 87, passed away peacefully May 1, 2014 at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, surrounded by family.
Paddy is survived by his wife of 57 years Kathleen Dolores “Dunny” (nee) Atkins, married May 4, 1957, children Patti Lee (Lonnie) Wright, Friendship, Tennessee, Allison (Peter) Jones, Fall River, Dolores (Scott ) Power, Halifax, Thomas “Tommy” (Ella) FitzGerald, Dartmouth, Toby (Stanley) Humphreys, Fall River, ten grandchildren Ryan and Ashley Wright, Hilarie Jones, Scott and Brody Power, Miranda, Tanner, and Katie FitzGerald, Maxwell and Samuel Humphreys, three great grandchildren Addyson, Moriah, and Karis Wright, and sisters Rita Townsend, Ontario, Mona Hanford, British Columbia, and Margaret Goss, Ontario.
Born in Cochrane, Ontario on January 19, 1927 to Thomas FitzGerald and May Cooper, Paddy was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve. He attended McGill and Mount Allison University before earning his law degree from Dalhousie in 1952. As one of the Province’s top trial lawyers, Paddy ran a successful legal practice, FitzGerald & Company, until 1979.
A devout family man and loyal friend with a strong sense of civic duty, Paddy was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in 1963, serving as an MLA from Bedford until 1970, Speaker of the House from 1969 to 1970, and Chairman of the Select Committee on Medicare. Previously he was a member of the Halifax Club, President of the Naval Officers Association of Canada, Nova Scotia branch, Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative Association and executive member , All Saints Church, Bedford. .
Paddy was someone who would avail himself to anyone in need. He will be greatly missed.
Service will be held Monday, May 12, 2014 at 2:00 at St Thomas’ Anglican Church, 5639 Highway 2, Fall River, NS with reception to follow in the church hall.
